Concrete Metal Glass: Hijjas Kasturi Associates Selected Works 1977-2007

Hijjas Kasturi Associates has been one of the leading architectural practices in Malaysia for over thirty years, during which time many of the firm’s designs have become national icons. The firm has been particularly sensitive to social and environmental concerns, and notably successful in the integration of art with technology. In this book, Paul McGillick traces the evolution of the practice and of its work. Tracing a shift in emphasis over time in the choice of construction materials—concrete, metal and glass, as the title suggests—he explores the development of the firm from its establishment in 1977 to its present position. Profiles of founder Hijjas Kasturi and of the firm’s director, Serina Hijjas, offer insights into the ethos and direction of the firm. The practice’s institutional and commercial buildings, for which it is best known, are covered in detail. Descriptions of each project are illustrated with photographs, many of them published for the first time, and with architectural drawings. A selection of other works are also showcased, including unbuilt works for Malaysia and overseas, particularly the Middle East. Besides being a guide to the works of Hijjas Kasturi Associates, Concrete Metal Glass goes further—revealing some of the particular challenges thrown up in the business of making buildings of this quality. It is both a definitive account of an eminent practice, and an illuminating account of the process of building design in a rapidly evolving architectural environment.
