The Indonesian Heritage Series (vol. 4)

When seen from an orbiting spacecraft, Indonesia appears as a green-swathed country by virtue of the plant life luxuriating in the warmth and abundant rain. On the ground, its plants are conspicuous, beautiful and of enormous significance to its people and the national economy. This volume is an appreciation of the plants of Indonesia, that are seen along city streets, around houses, and in the rainforests where enormous trees stand clothed with orchids and ferns, covered with lichens and mosses, and entwined by vines and creepers. Around the coast, specialised plants such as mangrove trees and seagrasses exploit extreme habitats. On mountaintops, there are exquisite flowers and elfin forests with gnarled boughs. These diverse plants are a cornucopia, providing timber, food, medicines and an array of other useful products.
