The Indonesian Heritage Series (vol. 9)

The early Austronesian inhabitants of Indonesia developed various religious beliefs that were represented in a wide range of ritual practices. These rituals expressed human concerns about crucial life issues: the agricultural cycle, birth, marriage and death. They were also concerned with understanding the place of man in the cosmos and making sense of his relationship with the deities and spirits who presided over everything. Later, other religions were introduced to the islands: Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam and Christianity, religions that modified or replaced many of the older practices. Although the vast majority of Indonesians are Muslims, Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity are all acknowledged by the Department of Religion. In this volume, the main religions, as they are interpreted and by the Indonesian people today, are described. At the same time, many of the rituals that are still adhered to, being recognised as aspects of Indonesia’s ancient cultures, are covered. The book is therefore an all-encompassing picture of Indonesia’s rich religious tapestry.
