Covarrubias in Bali

In the 1930s, the acclaimed Mexican artist Miguel Covarrubias and his wife Rose made two trips to Bali, the results of which would impact the world’s understanding of the island thereafter. Covarrubias’ Balinese works are unique and greatly indebted to the folk art and spirit of his nation as well as the graphic and illustrative arts of his era. This book contains 50 colour and 30 black-and-white photographs documenting the artist’s work, reproducing for the first time Covarrubias’ Balinese oeuvre, much of which has remained hidden from public view since the 1930s.
